Italian Sgraffito Terracotta Covered Dish

Italian Sgraffito Terracotta Covered Dish

This covered dish is the finest example of San Zeno pottery we have seen. San Zeno in the province of Pisa had almost twenty pottery factories in the mid-20th century. One of these pottery studios is of particular interest because it was founded in 1926 by a woman who wanted to train women to work in the ceramic arts. This covered dish features a foliate design engraved in sgrafitto into the clay. Sgrafitto or etching into clay or plaster was a technique employed even in architecture by Rafaels’ workshops, adorning the facades of Italian palaces. This little covered dish brings this history of the High Renaissance alive.
